Meerhout’s exact date of birth in Gorinchem is unknown. Jan Meerhout became especially famous for his landscapes that seem to concern the surroundings of Gorinchem. In one of the works, shown here on the left, the setting is still recognisable: the village centre of Schelluinen, close to Gorinchem. Meerhout also painted many cityscapes, mainly of his place of birth. His paintings show certain similarities with those of Aert van der Neer. |
